Background and Experience
ChrisCouve.com was founded in 2014 by Chris Couve, a marketing professional with a degree in marketing and a career that spans traditional retail, corporate finance, global e-commerce, and digital performance marketing. The agency draws on that breadth of experience to serve clients who need more than a generic digital marketing service — businesses that want a partner who understands the commercial reality of their industry.
Chris began his career in the corporate sector, working in asset finance before moving into marketing full-time. His early marketing work was rooted in the offline world — working with premium retail brands on in-store merchandising, events, and promotional campaigns across the full range of traditional consumer touchpoints. This foundation gave him a detailed understanding of how customers move through a buying journey and what drives the transition from awareness to purchase — knowledge that remains directly applicable to the way digital marketing is planned and executed today.
Twelve years ago, Chris began building online, starting with WordPress and WooCommerce at a time when the discipline of bridging offline brand experience with online commerce was still being defined. The client base that started then has largely stayed — a reflection of the long-term, results-focused approach that has characterised the agency’s work from the outset.
Over time, the focus sharpened toward digital marketing channels — Google, Meta, Mailchimp, and marketing automation — where the impact of well-executed strategy is most directly measurable. This period also saw a deepening specialisation in B2B digital marketing, with strong results for clients in commercial and industrial sectors where the online challenge is less about direct conversion and more about credibility, discoverability, and qualified lead generation.
One of the most significant experiences in the agency’s history has been working with a world-leading water sports brand on marketing campaigns spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa — managing multilingual sites and campaigns across more than a dozen markets simultaneously. That engagement tested and developed capabilities in international e-commerce, global campaign management, and the complexities of serving diverse audiences from a single platform.
For the past four years, Shopify and Shopify Plus have been the primary platform focus. Shopify’s combination of stability, innovation, and unified commerce functionality — covering everything from storefront and checkout to email automation, B2B selling, and third-party integrations — makes it the right platform for the majority of businesses at the stage of growth where digital performance becomes critical. We have built and managed more than 50 stores across platforms over the course of the agency’s history, with an increasing concentration in Shopify as the platform of choice.
How We Work
Not every client arrives knowing exactly what they need. Many businesses understand their products and their customers well, but find it difficult to translate that knowledge into a clear marketing brief or a defined set of digital objectives. Part of what we do is work through that process with clients — asking the right questions, listening carefully, and producing a clear, actionable strategy from what can often begin as a vague sense that something is not working.
The businesses we work best with are those that take their online presence seriously, operate in industries where we have relevant experience, and want a direct working relationship with the person who is actually doing the work. We are a focused, specialist practice — not a large generalist agency. That means clients have consistent access to the expertise they engaged, and the work reflects a genuine understanding of their business rather than being handed off to a junior team.
We work remotely with clients across South Africa and internationally, managing engagements that range from a single Shopify setup to multi-channel digital marketing programmes running across several markets. Where a specific engagement requires a capability outside our core service offering, we bring in specialist contractors on a case-by-case basis and manage the delivery — ensuring quality and consistency without expanding scope beyond what a client actually needs.
